3 weeks ago, I was spying… ahem… “doing research”, because I wanted to launch a new “lifestyle-design project”.
I came across a very interesting online micro-business which does really well – without investing much time and energy.
In this blog post, I’ll tell you how they do it, so you can do the same.
What you will learn in this blog post:
What is lifestyle design and why does it matter?
2 mistakes most lifestyle designers make
Case study of an online micro-business
2 benefits of owning such a micro-business
Step 1: Find the right products
Step 2: Set up the micro-business
Step 3: Add content
Lifestyle design may sound like a new-age “woo-woo” term. In reality, it means to create a life we love. One that gives us enough energy, time, freedom and money to enjoy it.
The term “lifestyle design” became popular when Tim Ferriss released his inspirational book “The 4-Hour WorkWeek.”
The classic “9-5” way of living is very limiting. For example:
– You waste time commuting to work.
– You work many more hours than you’d like.
– You don’t get compensated well.
Contrast that with the lifestyle of people who run an online micro-business (a tiny business that can be automated and produces income):
– They can work from wherever they like.
– They can choose projects they enjoy.
– If they do things right, they get compensated really well.
Many people try to design their lifestyle by building an online micro-business, but they fail.
Here are two mistakes they often make:
Mistake 1: Complicating things:
When you start an online micro-business, you can’t expect to become a billionaire like Bill Gates.
Remember: You just need to fund your ideal lifestyle – and believe me, you don’t need a skyscraper, or a billion-dollar bank account to be happy.
I made the mistake of trying to go “big” a couple of times. The result? Yes, I was making some more money, but the work hours and stress were insane. I’ll pass, thank you very much.
The lesson: Start small, and build up your online micro-business with time (if you want).
Mistake 2: Trying to come up with an original idea:
Remember when you were learning to walk? How did you achieve this? You watched others do it, and you learned to do the same.
The BEST way to learn is to find other people who have already built a successful online micro-business, and “model” them. AFTER we have the basics down, we can add our own twist and differentiate.
Some of my most successful projects came about after I got inspired by something that was already out there.
The online micro-business I’ll show you today is Inversion Tables Guides.
It sells inversion tables – contraptions that decompress the spine and help with lower-back pain. By the way, I own one myself. These things are worth their weight in gold.
This online micro-business gets free visitors from Google. How? It consistently ranks #2 on Google for the term inversion table reviews. Feel free to click the link, to verify this (new window).
Benefit 1: You don’t need to create any of your own products. See above for “Mistake 1 – Complicating things.” Creating products requires a lot of expertise.
Instead, you can just connect people with helpful products they will love, and you get to keep a generous “finder’s fee.”
Benefit 2: You don’t need to pay for advertising. Paid advertising works for some people – but others just lose their shirts.
If you do things right, you can get free traffic to your online micro-business all day long (like the example above).
Here’s how to do this:
The products you promote need to:
Be helpful: “Inversion Tables Guides” sells inversion tables which can be very helpful to people with lower-back problems. I have owned an inversion table for over 10 years and love it.
Pay well: Inversion Tables are not the cheapests things to buy. Many of them cost in the range of $300-$500.
Convert well: Amazon is the master of selling. Customer reviews on Amazon’s site help a lot.
One way to find products that satisfy all these criteria, is to use Amazon’s filters to look for products that “Have at least 4 out of 5 stars” and that “Cost above X dollars.”
Here’s an example for Inversion Tables:
You can click on the image above and go directly to the Amazon page.
By far, the most popular way to get an online presence is to use WordPress. This is a content-management system that was initially used for building blogs.
I have been using WordPress myself and love its simplicity.
Currently, I use a custom “pre-optimized” WordPress system I have developed to get the most amount of traffic quickly.
However, you can have a basic WordPress set up ready in less than 30 minutes.
Choose a mobile-responsive theme, that’s clean and simple.
Take another look at https://www.inversiontableguides.net/ and see the content it provides:
Product Reviews: The reviews mention both the pros and cons of each product. That way, they are more balanced and trustworthy.
Buyers guides: The content appears to be free (and it is) but it actually
helps people make a buying decision.
Blog posts about back pain: These educate the visitors and subtly presell the inversion tables.
In this blog post, you saw a real-life example of a successful online micro-business.
It doesn’t sell any products of it’s own, and it gets free visitors from search engines like Google.
Once it’s set up, it needs very little maintenance.
This is one of the simplest ways I know to design your lifestyle.
