A few years ago, I found myself “free” to do “whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.”
My online micro-business was doing well, without much “babysitting” from me. It was a system that was selling real value to people, and generating income all day long.
As you imagine, I had a lot of free time on my hands…
Here’s what I did with this “freedom”:
– Sometimes I would wake up at 8:00 AM, and sometimes at 11:00 AM.
– Whenever I felt like it, I was playing video games.
– I was binge-watching my favorite TV shows (“The Flash” or “Shark Tank”).
– I was browsing Facebook and YouTube, looking for something to stimulate my brain.
Sounds great, right?
Actually, it was horrible.
The fantasy of drinking margaritas on a tropical beach sounds great – but it quickly loses its appeal, if that’s all you do.
Freedom FROM vs freedom TO
When we first start thinking about freedom, we usually want to move AWAY from something. For example:
– A low-paying, soul-crushing job
– A berating boss
– Overbearing parents
But we finally realize that moving away from something won’t necessarily make us happy. Ok, we moved away from something – but WHERE specifically did we END UP?
Did we really create a fulfilling life? Or are we becoming SLAVES to new masters?
If TV, social media and a million other random things control our life, are we really free?
“Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
What real freedom is:
REAL freedom is NOT “doing nothing.” And it’s not wasting our lives away either. Because then, we may eventually lose our freedoms altogether. For example, if we don’t want to do any work at all, our business may collapse.
Freedom is being able to CHOOSE how we want to live a meaningful life.
We tend to think we want freedom from “structures.” In reality, we NEED structures and daily routines that will help us create more money, free time, and energy – so we can live a life of meaning and purpose.
It’s time to start going after real freedom, and not stay trapped in fake freedom fantasies that really keep us enslaved…
